Creative Works

Our service offers a personalized, hands-on approach to purchasing Maine art work.

Maine is alive with inspiring individuals who carry on in their studios creating works of art that embrace the timeless mystique of Maine. Applying a wide spectrum of mediums, these contemporary artists have embraced many subjects ranging from the natural environs and the Maine world within by telling stories through their work. Whether it is a recognizable coastal harbor, a quiet inland lake, portraits or impressionistic interpretations, each of these artists captures the essence, values and passion that many of us who live here in Maine intrinsically understand and embrace about our state. The works of many of these artists ultimately end up in galleries and studios throughout the state where collectors and individuals who are seeking a piece of the Maine experience find satisfaction and enjoyment by purchasing artwork for their homes, office or as a gift either as an investment or simply for pleasure.

Many of those who appreciate art created by contemporary Maine artists would like to make an individual purchase or lay the foundation for a collection, but do not know how to initiate the process. That is where we at Maine Art Advisors can help with individuals, businesses and corporations who are looking for a single original painting, high quality prints or building a collection for the home or office.

Our approach is novel. Maine Art Advisors offer a personalized, hands-on approach to purchasing art. The traditional manner of buying art is generally achieved through the relationship created between galleries and clients where the bond is created between those two parties. We have set a new standard by encouraging a relationship between the artist and the client. Maine Art Advisors is tailored to meet the needs of our clients who are seeking a more multi-faceted approach to purchasing Maine art by personally meeting the artists in their studios and galleries.

Our 35 years of connections in Maine through friendships and professional relationships within the art community give our clients a unique experience while making art purchases. We enjoy sharing our community of friends with others.

For those who prefer a less personalized, more anonymous experience we are able to tailor the handling of your purchase accordingly. Our clients find us tremendously flexible and resourceful making this method of purchasing art an experience in itself. A day trip to a coastal island, a ride to the Downeast area, or a trip to the lake and mountains of the state make for a unique opportunity not to be found with more conventional art purchasing services.

After an initial consultation that establishes the working parameters, Maine Art Advisors will then make a list of recommendations and the process begins.

We enjoy what we do. Our approach is casual, friendly and personalized. It makes for an enjoyable experience for both parties involved. We will be looking forward to hearing from you, your designer, or your assistant.

One of the multitude of other things that the founder of Maine Art Advisors involves her partnership in the Maine Grind, a popular coffee bar and café in Ellsworth, Maine. It is at the Maine Grind that Leslie Harlow puts on her public face and engages in chatter throughout the day with the endless stream of customers. Leslie also has a retail shop of uncommon goods for the home, gifts, books and outdoor adventure. She sells her own metal artwork creations along with other people’s works, primarily signed, limited edition photographs, prints and giclee prints. Currently being shown are works by three well-known Maine artists, Philip Frey and Gifford Ewing and Alan Claude. Philip Frey, www.philipfrey.com, is a Maine painter who works from his Sullivan studio. Philip is an inspiring artist whose work beautifully reflects the coast of Maine’s mystique, complicated character and timelessness. He was recently profiled in Maine Home and Design magazine, www.mainehomeandesign.com. His giclee prints, using archival inks and archival paper, are also available through Leslie’s web-site, www.itsamainething.com. Gifford Ewing, www.giffordewing.com, is an established photographer who has assembled a remarkable collection of fine art B/W images from around the country. Gifford works out of his Sorrento studio for part of the year where he prepares images that reflect the purity and natural landscape of coastal and inland Maine. Several of his images also grace the walls of the Maine Grind or can be purchased through www.itsamainething.com. Alan Claude,www.alanclaude.com, is a newcomer to the Maine art scene. His limited edition, signed prints of Maine lighthouses are reminiscent of the style of travel posters of yesteryear. The colors and boldness of his graphic images also capture feelings of Edward Hopper. All of these contemporary Maine artists have work in private and corporate collections throughout the US.
Upcoming Projects include: Archival, historic photographs of Downeast Maine. Recent acquisitions of historic, archival reproductions of photographs will be available for purchase through, www.itsamainething.com, or at the Maine Grind. These coastal images are part of a major undertaking by the Penobscot Marine Museum, www.penobscotmarinemuseum.org, to protect and preserve an outstanding collection of antique photographs. The Maine Grind is the only retail outlet for these images in eastern Downeast Maine.
