In life I am most drawn to that which is decorative, celebratory and outrageous. I am touched by such joyful trimmings as architectural embellishments, garden topiary, and ornamental cuisine and confections. I believe that the ritual of “making special” can connect humankind and imbue the world with joy and beauty.
I am not interested in stereotypical refinement and perfection in my work, instead I want there to be a trace of the hand. I view these traces as a gift, as a part of me “making special”. I hope to not only hand make objects used for celebration, but to also celebrate the handmade. It is from this perspective that I am most inspired to make decorative, functional pottery.
My pottery is made with Terra Cotta clay and formed using simple techniques like pinching, coiling and the rolling of slabs. They are covered with white slip and then painted with sweet and syrupy glazes.
I was born and raised in coastal Maine and received a BFA from the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine, and a MFA from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln in 2003. I have studied in Japan and been a resident at the Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts and The Clay Studio in Philadelphia where i was awarded the fully funded, year long Evelyn Shapiro Foundation Fellowship . I was an Emerging Artist at the 2004 NCECA (National Council for the Education in the Ceramic Arts) in Indianapolis, and will be a demonstraror this year in Phoenix. In 2006 I was awarded a SAC Artist Award by the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston. I teach adjunct at Bates college and spend the rest of my time gardening and making pots in Westbrook.
