The Bates Dance Festival, located at Bates College (Lewiston, Maine), is the leading presenter of contemporary dance in Northern New England during the summer. Founded in 1982, the Festival is an intensive five-week series of programs which brings together a community of over 50 dance artists with 340 students from around the globe and 4,000 audience members from across the state and region. Since its’ founding the Festival has evolved from a program of regional significance to a internationally recognized program known for its curatorial vision, innovative community projects, uniquely supportive and noncompetitive environment, and outstanding roster of contemporary artists.
Festival programs include: 1.) a performance and evening events series featuring internationally acclaimed contemporary dance artists; 2.) a 3-week professional dance training program for adults and a 3-week Young Dancers Workshop for dancers ages 13 17; 3.) a series of extensive community outreach activities, which serve local residents and the Maine dance community including the Community Dance Project, which brings community members together with nationally known choreographers to create and perform new work, and the Youth Arts Program, offering underserved youth ages 6-17 three weeks of dance and music classes with a staff of professional artists; 4.) extended commissioning and creative time residencies for established and emerging dance artists including the Emerging Choreographers Program, a residency program that supports the creation of new works by gifted young artists; and the International Visiting Artists Program, providing foreign artists with residencies and performance opportunities. Festival participants represent a range of ages and ethnic backgrounds, and come from 38 states and 7 foreign countries.

The Bates Dance Festival is a founding member of the Africa
Contemporary Arts Consortium (“TACAC”). TACAC is a landmark program
designed to initiate and sustain a dynamic exchange of arts and ideas
between artists, arts organizations and public communities throughout
the United States and the African continent. The Consortium is
dedicated to working with African artists who are interpreting
contemporary life through traditional, popular and or contemporary
forms. The Consortium's programs are rooted in experiential
opportunities that nurture dialogue and exchange allowing for organic
connections to evolve.
