Creative Works

The Commons is a place-based gallery of works by more than 90 local Downeast artists and artisans. Located in a lovingly-restored 1887 brick building on Eastport's waterfront, The Commons is locally owned and managed, and open year-round. Our byword is "natural"; our artists create their fine works using local materials like wood, stone, fiber and shells.  Our products include: metal, collage, ceramics, stone, sculpture, mixed media works, prints, paintings, illustrations, drawings, woodworking, glass, pottery,  home furnishings, purses, satchels, handbags,  clothing, fiber art, knitting (baby clothes, hats, gloves, scarves), shawls, jewelry (brooches, bracelets, earrings, rings and necklaces), bath decor, Native American baskets, cards, books,  and seasonal decor. We're the perfect place to find gifts for weddings, anniversaries or birthdays, and our suites (read below) provide the perfect place to celebrate such events.

We were designated by Yankee Magazine as an Editor's Choice pick for 2008.

In addition to the art works and products in our gallery, there are two elegant, fully-furnished suites on the second floor, which we offer for short to long-term rental.  Each suite has two bedrooms, spacious and inviting living space, ample and well-appointed kitchen, and unparallelled views of Passamaquoddy Bay and Canada's Campobello island from the windows and the waterfront deck.  If you love glorious sunrises (we catch the dawn's first rays, being the easternmost city in the U.S.), whales, seals, wildlife, wonderful restaurants, friendly and welcoming folks, live theater and music, art, literature, and watching the tide roll in and out, Eastport is the place for you. Your ideal perch will be in one of our suites.  Call us at 207-853-4123, or email us at [email protected] to let us help you plan your visit to Eastport.  You can also visit our website at www.thecommonseastport.com.

We are in the process of adding more of our products to this site and our website - so if you don't see what you're looking for here, feel free to call or email us to see if we have what you're looking for - chances are we have it, but have not yet gotten it posted!  We'd love to hear from you.

Our phone - 207-853-4123, our email - [email protected].

Current Projects

15 Sea Street - a continuation of The Commons vision for community and sustainable economy in Eastport.

15 Sea Street, the former 1907 Continental Can plant, later the American Can plant, is the newest renovation project for owners of The Commons. Scheduled to be renovated as a "green" building, the first floor will include a variety of artisan- and marine-related businesses, as well as historical interactive experiences. The second floor will be a boutique hotel with 21 rooms and a meeting space and spa. The third floor will have four high-end penthouse-style apartments for long-term lease and timesharing.

Because this project is envisioned as a resource and a legacy for Eastport, community partnership is sought-after and welcome.  If you are interested in learning about becoming a community partner in the exciting 15 Sea Street project, call (207-853-4123) or email us - [email protected].  You can read more about our 15 Sea Street project on our website, www.thecommonseastport.com.  A new 15 Sea Street web site is being created, and will be up and running by July 4, 2009 - we encourage you to take a look at what's going on in Eastport!
